The former NFL quarterback and current Fox analyst was in town to work the Raiders-Colts broadcast. Early Saturday morning, reports emerged that Sanchez had been stabbed shortly after midnight and was in critical condition. Then came the surprise.

Sanchez was arrested while in the hospital on charges of battery with injury, unlawful entry of a vehicle, and public intoxication.

Speculation swirled until Sunday morning, when the probable cause affidavit was released. According to police, Sanchez was the aggressor. Investigators believe the 69-year-old truck driver who stabbed him acted in self-defense after concluding Sanchez was going to kill him. The man was in Indianapolis picking up used cooking oil from a hotel kitchen when the encounter took place.

Later that day, local Fox and CBS affiliates published graphic photos of the victim's injuries. His family told TMZ he is "OK," but added, "We are talking to lawyers first. We want to be careful what's said. We appreciate that."

Sanchez was released from the hospital on Sunday and booked into jail before bonding out.

As Pro Football Talk's Mike Florio noted, Sanchez is entitled to the presumption of innocence. But surveillance cameras reportedly captured much of the incident. He will need a strong explanation to avoid conviction, especially after allegedly telling police he didn't know what happened or how he was injured.

The investigation remains active, and Sanchez's legal situation is only getting more complicated.
