Jim Harbaugh will not be returning to the college sidelines any time soon. In fact, the door may be closed for a decade (or more).

The NCAA has handed the current Los Angeles Chargers coach a 10-year "show cause" order, the result of its investigation into the Connor Stalions advance scouting scandal. That penalty means any NCAA school hiring Harbaugh would have to convince the governing body why it should not also be sanctioned.

At 61, Harbaugh is unlikely to make a college comeback under those circumstances. The NCAA explained the reasoning in its announcement, saying Harbaugh "did not embrace or enforce a culture of compliance during his tenure, and his program had a contentious relationship with Michigan's compliance office, leading coaches and staff to disregard NCAA rules."

The organization chose not to impose a two-year postseason ban on Michigan, saying it did not want to punish current players for the actions of former coaches and staff. Instead, Michigan will face financial penalties and recruiting restrictions.

The situation also raises questions for the NFL. Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk notes that in 2023, the league-owned media outlet reminded readers that jumping to pro football is not always a "safe harbor" from NCAA-related discipline. In past cases, the NFL took action against both a player (Terrelle Pryor) and a coach (Jim Tressel) after NCAA sanctions.

From an NFL.com piece in October 2023: "And the point was made: No one should escape discipline by leaving college for the pros."

Florio writes that it is fair to ask whether the NFL will consider similar action now, given the severity of the NCAA's ruling. The league has not yet responded to a request for comment.

For now, Harbaugh's only sideline will be in the NFL, and even that may draw a second look.
