Hey, guess what? The New England Patriots are open to trading their No. 3 overall pick in next week's NFL Draft and they're telling the entire universe.
"We're open to anything, moving up, moving down," GM Eliot Wolf told reporters. "We're open for business in the first round and in every round. We have some holes we feel like we need to fill in the draft, and we're a draft-and-develop team. The more picks we have, the better. But if there's an opportunity to move up and strike if the board kind of recommends it, then we won't be afraid to pull the trigger on that either."
New England is coming off a disappointing year and a massive shakeup, given the parting of ways with legendary coach Bill Belichick. So talking trade of a draft pick fits the theme of the offseason.
Oh, they also sent quarterback Mac Jones packing in a trade with the Jacksonville Jaguars. These are just the types of things that happen when you finish 4-13.
As the New York Post wrote:
"The draft truly begins with the Commanders at No. 2, as the Bears are certain to take USC quarterback Caleb Williams at No. 1 after trading Justin Fields to the Steelers."
"Washington is also expected to take a quarterback, and the remaining options projected to go high are LSU's Jayden Daniels, UNC's Drake Maye and Michigan's J.J. McCarthy. It's unclear whether the Commanders would be willing to move one pick down should the Patriots want their pick of those three."
Right now, the Patriots' main man is none other than journeyman QB Jacob Brissett, who signed a one-year deal with the team. He spent his rookie year in New England but has bounced around to the Cleveland Browns, Indianapolis Colts and Washington Commanders since.
So it's safe to say the Patriots will want another quarterback. Brissett could start, but at the very least, they will need someone to develop. And they may move their draft pick to make it happen.
