The 6-1, 185-pounder reportedly worked out for New England coaches at Gillette Stadium Thursday, and was immediately added to the 53-man roster.

Whalen will fill in on an ailing receiving corps after Amendola suffered an ankle injury Sunday against the Los Angeles Rams that's expected to keep him sidelined for the rest of the regular season. He's also expected to play special teams.

A five-year veteran out of Stanford, Whalen was cut from the San Diego Chargers in late November and also spent four seasons in Indianapolis.

For his career, he's tallied 47 catches for 509 yards and three touchdowns, returned 46 punts for 376 yards, and 29 kicks for 701 yards.

However, Whalen is probably best known for his role in one of the of the worst plays in NFL history—-this fake punt attempt by the Indianapolis Colts last season.
