The team announced the news on Tuesday and confirmed that it will search for a new defensive coordinator for the fourth time in four seasons.

Eberflus, who spent three seasons as head coach of the Bears, replaced Mike Zimmer after a 2024 season in which the Cowboys finished 31st among 32 teams in points allowed (468). The change did not pay dividends as the Cowboys finished 30th in yards allowed (377.0 per game) and 32nd in points allowed (30.1 per game).

The Cowboys also parted ways with Micah Parsons ahead of the season, sending him to the Packers. The veteran defender did not finish the season due to an injury, but he still posted 12.5 sacks in 14 games while earning another Pro Bowl nomination.

The team then brought in Quinnen Williams from the Jets ahead of the trade deadline in an effort to bolster the unit after giving up more than 30 points in five of the first nine games.

The season also saw the Cowboys only securing 12 turnovers and 35 sacks while giving up more than 500 points for the first time in franchise history. They released cornerback Trevon Diggs, who moved to the Packers for Week 18 and beyond.

"I might not couch it as difficult," team owner Jerry Jones said when asked about finding a new coordinator, per the team website. "It's certainly something that we have to do.

"And that is to look at the entire year and look at what our options are, and how to correct it so we're not here at the same time next year. Now, that's not uncommon to evaluate at this time of the year — your entire coaching staff.

"And, obviously, the target is on him because of our statistical, as well as actual play on the defensive side of the ball, but that goes with it."
