According to ESPN, the Twiggs County Sheriff's Office clocked Smith going 135 mph in a 70-mph zone. They arrested him for speeding and reckless driving. He made bond and was released approximately an hour after his arrest.
ESPN notes that a court date is currently set for July 14. However, Smith can avoid this by paying the fines associated with the traffic citations.
This is not the first time that Smith has been arrested on traffic-related charges. Another incident occurred in 2022, nine days after he helped the Georgia Bulldogs win the National Championship.
An officer in Barrow County, Georgia, clocked Smith driving 89 mph in a construction zone near the intersection of University Parkway and Jackson Trail Road in Winder on Jan. 19, 2022. The officer said in the transcript that he pulled Smith over and that he smelled marijuana during their interaction.
Smith gave his driver's license to the officer, who then discovered that it had been suspended for a full year due to "a serious violation under 21." The linebacker told the officer that he was supposed to be getting his license reinstated on the morning of Jan. 20, 2022.
The officer searched the vehicle and discovered a small amount of marijuana inside a grinder, which he allowed Smith to destroy. The officer then arrested Smith for driving on a suspended license.
The linebacker returned to the Georgia Bulldogs after his arrest, and he played in eight games as the team won its second consecutive National Championship. He then entered the 2023 NFL Draft, where the Eagles selected him with the 30th overall pick.
Smith has spent all three seasons of his NFL career with the Eagles. He has played in 45 games while starting 22. He has posted 91 combined tackles, 10.5 sacks, two passes defensed, and two forced fumbles. He will return to the team in 2026.
