The Cowboys announced on Thursday that Kneeland, 24, had passed away. They did not provide a cause of death at the time, but the Frisco PD has since said it is investigating the incident as a possible suicide.

"A man was found deceased from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound following an outside agency vehicle pursuit that led to a multi-agency search in Frisco," a statement from the department said.

"On November 5, 2025, at approximately 10:39 p.m., the Frisco Police Department responded to assist the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) with locating a vehicle that had evaded troopers during a pursuit that entered the city of Frisco. After losing visual of the vehicle, troopers located it minutes later, crashed on southbound Dallas Parkway near Warren Parkway.

"Initial reports indicated that a male subject, later identified as 24-year-old Marshawn Kneeland of Plano, TX, fled the scene on foot. Officers established a perimeter and initiated a search of the area with the assistance of the FPD K-9 and Drone units.

"During the course of the search, officers received information that Kneeland had expressed suicidal ideations. Kneeland was later located at 1:31 a.m., deceased with what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound. The cause/manner of death will be determined by the Collin County Medical Examiner's Office."

The Frisco Police Department continued the statement by saying that they will release no further details as the investigation remains ongoing.

The Cowboys selected Kneeland out of Western Michigan with a second-round pick in the 2024 NFL Draft. He has played in 18 games while posting 26 combined tackles, four quarterback hits, one sack, and one touchdown off a blocked punt.

The Cowboys are inactive this week after a loss to the Cardinals, so the players will not be back at the facility until next week. The team sits at 3-5-1.

"The NFL Players Association is deeply saddened by the passing of Marshawn Kneeland," the NFLPA said in a statement on Thursday. "His impact on those around him was immeasurable, and his loss is felt profoundly across our community. We're working to ensure that players have the support they need, and our condolences are with Marshawn's family and loved ones.

"To our player members, please remember that navigating grief can be difficult. Lean on one another and take care of your well-being. We encourage you to reach out to us for wellness support or use the NFL Life Line."
