The Fox Sports broadcast of a game between the Washington Commanders and Detroit Lions took a surprising turn on Sunday evening as President Donald Trump joined the booth for an extended sequence.

The president attended the game during Salute to Service month, and he first led an enlistment ceremony for new members of the United States military. He then joined play-by-play man Kenny Albert and analyst Jonathan Vilma in the booth to talk some football.

"I played tight end, but I mean it was not quite football like this," President Trump said during his time in the booth. "It was a little easier. It wasn't so tough.

"We had a quarterback who didn't have a very strong arm. I would say 10 yards was a long pass."

The appearance did not end with a discussion of President Trump's football background at the New York Military Academy. He also worked as an analyst as the Commanders tried to overcome a 32-10 deficit.

"I will say that your second-string, your backup quarterback is a good quarterback, and he's had some very good games for you," the president said while discussing the Commanders depth chart.

"Your first-string quarterback has the potential, I think, to be a great quarterback. He's got to stop the injuries somehow. And let's see. We have a very important, a very important couple of plays."

The back-and-forth began as the Commanders faced a second-and-seven situation from the Lions' eight-yard line. Once the Commanders reached a third-and-four situation, he said that the team had to get a touchdown. This prompted Vilma to joke that the president was doing his job.

The booth appearance continued with conversations about the New York Jets, New York Giants, and New Orleans Saints. He talked about how he loved Joe Namath and how the quarterback had a great arm that made up for his legs.

President Trump then talked about how Saints quarterback Drew Brees was so accurate that "it was like throwing darts."

"Somebody like Drew Brees, he threw a ball that you could catch," he said. "It wasn't going 200 miles an hour that hits you in the face."
