The Bears Are Considering a Controversial Quarterback Decision

The Chicago Bears hold the No. 1 overall pick following a trade last year with the Carolina Panthers — and while quarterback Justin Fields is still on the roster, there's a prevailing theory they could keep the Ohio State product and draft former USC signal-caller Caleb Williams.

ESPN's Get Up shared a video of Adam Schefter reporting the potential decision by the Bears via X.

"They have talked about the idea, as unlikely as it seems, carrying both quarterbacks. ... Taking the guy at one and keeping Fields," ESPN's Adam Schefter said in a clip that appeared on the show "Get Up."

Schefter did add it's "hard to imagine that" but that it's been discussed.

From there on the show, they went back to a studio shot of Mike Greenberg praising former Indianapolis Colts head coach and player Jeff Saturday, as he had that exact opinion.

Saturday mentioned that drafting a quarterback is an "inexact science" and likened this potential outcome to the Kansas City Chiefs when they had Alex Smith but also drafted Patrick Mahomes as an heir apparent.

"Allow Caleb Williams to develop," Saturday said. "See what the game really is, how good can he be, how good can Fields be, maybe his trade value goes way up, because the reality is Caleb Williams is not winning a Super Bowl his first year in Chicago, your team isn't winning it, so why don't you actually take care of Caleb Williams instead of trying to do the exact same thing you've already done and expect something different."

This past season, Fields threw for 2,562 yards in 13 games. He had 16 passing touchdowns and nine interceptions. He improved as a passer from the prior year, seeing increases in yards and completion percentage along with two fewer interceptions. He did, however, see a dip in yards per attempt and average depth of target.

Where Fields excels is his rushing ability. He had 653 rushing yards and four touchdowns.

Now we wait to see if Fields remains in Chicago ahead of the 2024 NFL Draft, which begins April 25.
