This stretch began in 2020 with the Philadelphia Eagles, the team that drafted Wentz back in 2016. The former North Dakota State quarterback started 12 games in his final season with the NFC East team. He went 3-8-1.
Wentz moved to the Indianapolis Colts in 2021 and served as the full-season starter. He led the team to a 9-8 record while throwing for 3,563 yards, 27 touchdowns, and seven interceptions. The Colts finished second in the AFC South and missed the playoffs.
The 2022 season featured Wentz suiting up for the Washington Commanders. He appeared in eight games, starting seven, and posted a 2-5 record. One season later, he appeared in two games for the Los Angeles Rams. He won his lone start against the San Francisco 49ers.
Last season, Wentz joined the Kansas City Chiefs. He saw action in three games and started one in place of Patrick Mahomes. He lost to the Denver Broncos in the regular-season finale.
The veteran quarterback joined the Minnesota Vikings on Aug. 24 and became JJ McCarthy's primary backup. The expectation was that he would not start any games this season, but an ankle injury changed the situation.
Wentz will now lead the Vikings for the first time this season as he takes on the Bengals. This could turn into extended time under center depending on how long McCarthy takes to recover.
The Vikings schedule continues with the Steelers in Week 4 and the Browns in Week 5. The team has a Bye in Week 6, which could provide McCarthy with an extra week to get game-ready.
