NFL refs threatened Lions receivers with 'booger flick' penalties

NFL referees threatened to penalize members of the Detroit Lions offense last weekend in response to their "booger flick" celebration.

Amon-Ra St. Brown revealed this during this week's episode of the "St. Brown Podcast" that he records with brother Equanimeous St. Brown. He said that the referees issued a warning after multiple members of the offense did this celebration on the Lions' opening drive against the Rams.

"What happened?" St. Brown asked during the episode. "Bro, we do it (the celebration) the first drive, our receivers coach comes after the first drive, 'Hey, man, refs said you guys can't do that no more.'

"...Why is that bad? I want to know. NFL, why can't I dig in my nose and flick it? Like, there's no way... what is bad about that? Is that disrespectful? Is that derogatory?"

Jameson Williams broke out the celebration early in the game. Footage posted on X showed him making a catch near the Rams' 30-yard line. Once he got up from the ground, he pantomimed picking his nose with his index finger. He then made a motion like he was flicking the booger toward the end zone.

Williams was not the first member of the offense to break out the celebration. St. Brown did it first. Williams followed, as did running back Jahmyr Gibbs. Once these players headed back to the sidelines after this opening drive, the referee issued the warning to the receivers coach.

The NFL has cracked down on celebrations this season while handing out penalties and fines. The majority of the time, these are in response to celebrations deemed violent or sexual in nature.

For example, a receiver can't mimic using a gun after scoring a touchdown, nor can a running back recreate the two pumps celebration from the "Key & Peele" sketch series. Even if the player doesn't receive a penalty during the game, they will receive a fine later in the week.

St. Brown did not say if he had received a fine for this celebration. He only confirmed that it is on the list of prohibited motions after big plays.
