The Packers Make Too Much Sense as Germany's Favorite Team

There may not be another two international fanbases that make a more logical pair than the Green Bay Packers and Germany.

As the NFL prepares for back-to-back weekends in Frankfurt, German fans around the country are getting ready to watch some American football, with games taking place between the Miami Dolphins and Kansas City Chiefs on November 5, followed by another AFC showdown between the Indianapolis Colts and New England Patriots the following Sunday.

However, fans in Germany will be missing out on their favorite teams during this two-week stretch. A poll from 2022 revealed that the Packers are Germany's favorite NFL team, while an early 2023 blog suggested that the Green Bay franchise finished as a runner-up to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers based on search volume in Germany.

The Buccaneers received a bump world wide thanks to the superstardom of Tom Brady, and while Tampa had more search traffic in 2023, it's clear that the Packers and Germany were meant to be together.

Wisconsin natives and German citizens alike have an intense appreciation for the finer things in life, most notably beer and cheese. With Wisconsin as the home of Miller Lite and Packers fans creating a wearable cheesehead, Germany fits in almost perfectly with the Packers fan culture. The country consumes over two million tons of cheese every year, while their most famous holiday internationally is Oktoberfest, which resulted in a total of 7.3 million liters of beer consumed in 2019 over the two-week festival.

Along with Germany's love of beer and cheese, the country has been able to adopt the Packers more easily thanks to the team's international popularity. With superstar quarterbacks in Aaron Rodgers and Brett Favre over the last few decades, an international audience has seen the Packers in three Super Bowls over the last few decades.

Although the Packers may not be experiencing their usual success under Matt LaFleur and Jordan Love in 2023, the team continues to hold a strong fandom overseas thanks to the Germany audience.
