Packers' Matt LaFleur's job not on the line against Bears

The Green Bay Packers are not expected to make a change at head coach if Matt LaFleur fails to lead the team beyond the wild-card round of the NFL playoffs.

According to NFL insider Ian Rapoport, the outcome of Saturday night's battle with the Chicago Bears (8 p.m. ET on Prime Video) will not play a role in the head coach's future with the NFC North team.

In fact, Rapoport reports that the Packers and LaFleur will sit down after the season to discuss a contract extension now that CEO Ed Policy has a full season of information from his new perspective.

"Green Bay likes LaFleur, respects him and believes he's a great fit both in the organization and in the community," the longtime insider wrote ahead of Saturday night's game. "If everything goes well, the hope is that remains for a long time."

A branch of the Sean McVay coaching tree, LaFleur took over as head coach of the Green Bay Packers in 2019. He has compiled a record of 76-40-1 in seven seasons while leading the team to the playoffs all but one time. An 8-9 record in 2022 served as the lone exception.

The Packers have gone 3-5 in the playoffs under the former offensive coordinator's leadership but have only reached the NFC championship twice. The Packers lost to the 49ers to close out the 2019 season and then lost to the Buccaneers to close out the 2020 season.

The Packers have won the NFC North three times under LaFleur but not since Aaron Rodgers departed the organization. The team's best finish under the LaFleur-Jordan Love pairing is second in the division in 2023 and 2025.

The now-veteran head coach has one year remaining on his contract, so he is already set to return for the 2026 NFL season. However, the reported plan is for the Packers to put pen to paper this offseason on an extension so that he does not take what has been a productive offense to another organization.
