Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Baker Mayfield is ready to face off with his former coach twice a year after being lumped into a "dumpster fire" comparison.

Atlanta Journal-Constitution Falcons beat writer D. Orlando Ledbetter posted an article on X on Tuesday night with the title of "Kevin Stefanski had a dumpster fire at quarterback in Cleveland." He wrote that Mayfield and Deshaun Watson had "failed" and started a chain reaction.

Mayfield took exception to this article, and he made this clear to Ledbetter. He wrote, "Failed is quite the reach pal. Still waiting on a text/call from him after I got shipped off like a piece of garbage. Can't wait to see you twice a year, Coach."

Stefanski, the former coach of the Browns, recently landed a new role. He will take over the Falcons in 2026, which means he will now be in the NFC South with Mayfield.

Adding to the intrigue, the original post from Ledbetter fell victim to community notes. Readers highlighted the fact that Mayfield took the Browns to and 11-5 record and an appearance in the playoffs in 2020. The team then defeated the rival Steelers in the wild-card round.

Mayfield threw for 3,563 yards, 26 touchdowns, and eight interceptions during this season. He added 165 rushing yards and one rushing touchdown.

The following season, the former Oklahoma quarterback suffered a partially torn labrum. He went 6-8 in the 14 games he started as his passing yards fell to 3,010. He only threw 17 touchdowns compared to 13 interceptions.

The Browns traded Mayfield to the Panthers in July 2022 for a mid-round pick. He did not remain in North Carolina, however, as he only appeared in seven games before being granted his release. He closed out the 2022 season with the Rams and then he joined the Buccaneers for 2023 and beyond.

This move to Tampa Bay has significantly benefited Mayfield despite a constant rotation of offensive coordinators. He has earned two trips to the Pro Bowl while posting two 4,000-yard seasons. The Buccaneers have made the playoffs twice in this span and reached the divisional round once.
