The Carolina Panthers are facing an investigation from the NFL Players Association early in training camp due to an injury.

Second-year linebacker Nic Scourton tore his ACL on July 23, and he had to be carted off of the field. Now, he will miss the 2026 season after being expected to fill a role in the starting lineup.
The investigation stems from the fact that this torn ACL happened on the first day of training camp. This is supposed to be the mandatory five-day acclimation period for players. With the injury occurring in this period, the NFLPA has now stepped in.
A spokesperson for the Panthers said that the team is aware of the investigation and that it is cooperating. This process will involve the investigators having access to video of the session, so that they can see if Scourton did anything not allowed during this acclimation period.
While the investigation continues, the Panthers will move forward and try to fill the hole left by Scourton's injury. He contributed 47 combined tackles, seven tackles for a loss, nine quarterback hits, five sacks, one pass defensed, and one forced fumble as a rookie.
The Panthers took a step toward achieving this by calling up linebacker Cam Gill, who won United Football League Defensive Player of the Year after posting a league-record 10 sacks for the champion Louisville Kings.
Gill is a familiar face in the Panthers facility. The former undrafted free agent spent 2020, 2021, and 2023 with the Buccaneers before joining the Panthers in 204. He played in 10 games and posted 22 combined tackles. He also registered four quarterback hits.
Gill hit the practice field shortly after Scourton's injury, and he has remained with the team while trying to secure a spot for the 2026-27 season. Meanwhile, fans of the team wait for some clarity regarding the ongoing investigation into the torn ACL.
