"Devastated to hear about the passing of my brother, teammate, and Rams legend Leroy Irvin," Dickerson wrote in his Instagram post.

"Leroy wasn't just a lockdown corner and a fierce competitor on the field; he was a true friend and a great man who always brought incredible energy. Rest in peace, my brother. Sending my thoughts and prayers to the Irvin family and all of Rams Nation."

A New Jersey native, Irvin spent his college years playing for Kansas. He then headed to the NFL as a third-round pick in the 1980 Draft. He kicked off a 10-year tenure with the Rams.

Irvin played in all 16 games as a rookie, but he primarily lined up as a returner. Although he still tallied the first two interceptions of his career while contributing in the defensive backfield.

Irvin became a full-time starting cornerback as his career progressed, and he began adding awards to his resume. For example, he earned First-Team All-Pro honors in 1981, his second season in the league.

He earned First-Team All-Pro honors yet again in 1986, the year that he posted six interceptions, one interception return for a touchdown, one forced fumble, and one fumble return for a touchdown. He earned his second trip to the Pro Bowl during the 1986 season.

Irvin spent 10 years with the Rams and one with the Lions before ending his career in 1990. He left the sport with four punt return touchdowns, six defensive touchdowns, 35 interceptions, 10 forced fumbles, and 13 fumble recoveries. He added four interceptions and two forced fumbles in 11 playoff games.

"We mourn the loss of Rams Legend LeRoy Irvin," the NFL team said in a statement. "We extend our condolences to his family and friends during this difficult time."
