McCarthy began limping as he headed toward the locker room and needed assistance getting off the field. He spent halftime in the blue medical tent instead of addressing his players, CBS Sports reported.
After the game, McCarthy explained that someone had stepped on him and said he was feeling better. He delegated much of his halftime responsibilities to assistant coach Joe Whitt Jr. while receiving treatment.
The injury did not keep McCarthy out for the remainder of the game. He returned to the sideline for the start of the second half and resumed calling Pittsburgh's offensive plays.
At that point, the Steelers had considerable work ahead of them. Tampa Bay led 13-3 at halftime, with Pittsburgh managing just 102 yards of offense through two quarters.
The Steelers converted only one of their six third-down attempts in the first half and failed on their lone fourth-down try. An Aaron Rodgers pass that Darnell Washington juggled became an interception by A'Shawn Robinson, setting up Tampa Bay's first points.
Buccaneers rookie quarterback Jalon Daniels also gave Pittsburgh problems, completing nine consecutive passes during one stretch and throwing a short touchdown pass to Emeka Egbuka.
But Pittsburgh recovered after the break with McCarthy back on the sideline. The Steelers rallied for a 26-19 overtime victory, giving their coach a winning finish to an afternoon that included an unexpected trip to the medical tent.
