Warren Sapp and ESPN's Booger McFarland were also critical of Garrett, but Garrett seemed to respond better to Smith's criticism.
"[H]e said I was slow off the ball, but that is coming from the very best," Garrett said according to Pro Football Talk. "He is just trying to teach me the tricks that I can get off the ball faster and do it even better. If I learn that and keep on practicing that, then I will perform at a high level."
Garrett and Smith watched film together on draft day when Smith gave the top pick his advice.
Garrett said he wouldn't take Smith's advice lightly.
Garrett declined to appear on ESPN Radio after McFarland criticized him, but he didn't seem to mind Smith's comments.
Sapp called Garrett "lazy," but Garrett didn't offer a retort to Sapp.
Smith recorded 200 sacks during his NFL career, so he knows a thing or two about pass rushing. The Cleveland Browns are hoping Garrett can provide similar production for their defense in the future.
