Canales, who wore a Band-Aid on his nose during the Panthers' minicamp practice, said the issue was discovered during a routine skin cancer screening conducted by the team about two months ago.

"It's a good reminder not to take these things for granted," Canales told NFL reporters. "It was a basal cell type of skin cancer in a small spot, and they were able to get it off. So I'm really appreciative."

According to The Skin Cancer Foundation, basal cell carcinoma is the most common form of skin cancer, per the Associated Press. It is generally slow-growing, highly treatable and rarely spreads to other parts of the body.

Canales, 45, said his family has a history of skin cancer, noting that his mother dealt with similar issues in her 40s.

As a result, the Southern California native said he has long tried to be diligent about protecting himself from sun exposure.

"You can imagine a Southern California kid playing outdoor sports and then getting into coaching, right?" Canales said.

The Panthers opened minicamp last week as Canales enters his third season as head coach.
