"On Thursday, October 15, there was an incident at our team facility involving Jordan Elliott," the team said in a statement.
"Following our review of the incident, we have made the decision to release Elliott from our roster. We will have no further comment on the matter."
The incident occurred after an altercation with a teammate at practice. Elliott went to his car to retrieve a handgun, which is strictly prohibited at team facilities. However, the gun remained in the parking lot.
Multiple sources told reporters that defensive lineman John Franklin-Myers helped de-escalate the situation. The Titans notified the NFL about the incident.
And while the Titans did not have any further comments about the situation, head coach Robert Saleh addressed it during a press conference. He confirmed that Elliott had indeed gone to his car.
"(Elliott) had a terrible lapse in judgment that I recognize as a call for help more than a criminal act," Saleh told media members. "It's unfortunate the way it went down.
"As far as Jordan's concerned and the locker room and all that, I think people see it differently here than the knee-jerk reaction of the world."
The head coach continued and said that he will stand on the table for the now-former Titans player. He also noted that "rules are rules" regarding guns on the property.
Elliott, a third-round pick in the 2020 NFL Draft, was only five games into his first season with the Titans after signing a two-year deal worth $8 million. He previously spent two seasons with the 49ers and four with the Browns.
His future in the NFL remains uncertain after the firearm-related incident at the practice facility, but Saleh told media members that he would endorse Elliott as a free agent.
"My message to 31 other teams would be if you need a helluva run-stopping D-tackle that can help you on a playoff run, give me a call," Saleh said. "I'll tell you everything you need to know about him."
