The Lions announced Monday they have released the former NFL first-round pick, just hours after a Florida judge ruled Arnold could be released on a $1 million bond while awaiting trial in his criminal case.
Arnold had been held without bond since voluntarily surrendering to authorities on June 24.
The 23-year-old cornerback faces multiple felony charges stemming from an alleged incident in the Tampa area earlier this year, including kidnapping, armed robbery and conspiracy-related charges. Arnold has denied the allegations, and his case remains pending.
Detroit selected Arnold with the 24th overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft after a standout career at Alabama. He had two years remaining on his rookie contract.
By releasing Arnold before the legal process plays out, the Lions will absorb dead money on their salary cap rather than voiding the remaining guaranteed money in his contract.
According to Spotrac, Detroit is expected to carry approximately $3.9 million in dead cap charges in 2026 and another $4.5 million in 2027.
The move represents a significant decision by the organization, which chose not to wait for the outcome of Arnold's criminal proceedings before cutting ties with the former first-round pick.
Arnold was granted bond earlier Monday under several conditions, including surrendering his passport, remaining at home or work, and avoiding contact with co-defendants or witnesses. No trial date has been announced.
