The Fighting Irish have built a reputation for having a strong offensive line under Hiestand's watch. The group won the 2017 Joe Moore Award last month for having the most outstanding offensive line unit in the country. The unit has had four offensive linemen drafted in the top three rounds in the NFL since 2013 and is expected to have two more players selected in this year's draft.
Hiestand served as the offensive line coach for the Bears from 2005 to 2009 and was with Tennessee prior to joining Notre Dame in 2012. Many believe Hiestand will be a huge addition to new Bears head coach Matt Nagy's staff given his terrific work at Notre Dame.
This is Notre Dame's second big coaching loss of the offseason. The team also lost defensive coordinator Mike Elko to Texas A&M earlier this month.
