One personality is leaving CBS’s NFL coverage, which means there’s a Tony Romo update

One CBS NFL personality is stepping down, and there's a new Tony Romo update.

Future NFL Hall of Fame tight end Tony Gonzalez announced he is leaving The NFL Today after serving as an analyst for the last three years.

Gonzalez said spending time with family and travel were the main reasons he has decided to step away.

"I have had an incredible and rewarding three years at CBS and wish it could be more, but traveling to New York each week during the season is not what is best for my family at this time," Gonzalez said in a statement via CBS Sports. "While I hope to remain in broadcasting I will look to do so in the L.A. area. I can't thank CBS enough for their support."

A CBS spokesperson thanked Gonzalez for his time at CBS and said they respected his decision to focus on his family.

CBS now has a vacancy for its studio show, and it's possible they could have interest in Tony Romo if he opts not to play football next year.

However, Sports Illustrated media analyst Richard Deitsch said he thinks CBS would prefer Romo in the booth rather than the studio should he retire.

"ESPN's Adam Schefter reported that both Fox and CBS are interested in Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo should he retire," Deitsch said. "If Romo opted for television, it would be highly unlikely he'd be interested in a studio role at CBS over the prospect of calling games."

Romo has options outside of football if he isn't interested in playing another season or if teams aren't interested in him. However, the saga with the Dallas Cowboys on whether they will trade or release him continues another day.
