Packers QB Jordan Love Won't Practice Without New Deal

The Green Bay Packers have given the keys to the team to quarterback Jordan Love, but he's not willing to drive them just yet. Instead, Love reportedly won't practice or play in any games without a contract extension.

But hey, at least there's no bad blood.

"We completely understand where he's coming from," Packers general manager Brian Gutekunst told reporters.

The Packers and Love at least seem to be nearing an agreement on the contract extension, according to Rob Demovsky of ESPN.

"Yeah, I think so, but again, you never know," Gutekunst said when asked if the sides were close to a deal. "We're working really hard to get that done. At the same time, the thing I have confidence in is we both want the same thing."

Demovsky wrote:

"The Packers have no immediate plans to add another quarterback. Coach Matt LaFleur said second-year pro Sean Clifford will handle the first snaps with the starters, but the reps will be split 50-50 between Clifford and rookie Michael Pratt. LaFleur said former NFL quarterback Sean Mannion, who was hired as an assistant coach this offseason, will help with throws during drill work.

"When asked how long they can sustain that without adding a third quarterback, LaFleur said: 'That's a great question. Obviously we're hopeful we'll get something done here in the next ... sooner than later. But that's something that we're gonna have to just adjust on the fly.'"

The Packers open the NFL preseason on August 10 with a road game against the Cleveland Browns. The regular season also begins on the road, on a Friday night, with a visit to the Philadelphia Eagles (September 6). That game will be streamed on the Peacock app.
