The Green Bay Packers are hosting veteran cornerback Rachad Wildgoose for a free agent visit, multiple league sources tell FanBuzz.
Wildgoose, 23, has appeared in 20 career games for the New York Jets and Washington Commanders, tallying 19 total tackles and three pass breakups so far in his career.
Chosen by the Buffalo Bills in the fifth-round of the 2021 NFL Draft, Wildgoose was released at the end of training camp that summer, only to be re-signed to the practice squad and ultimately joining the New York Jets that season, where he appeared in five games.
The former University of Wisconsin standout appeared in 25 games during his collegiate career, where he logged 57 total tackles, with 5.0 tackles for loss, intercepted one pass, and broke up 14 more, while also recovering three fumbles for the Badgers.
According to Pro Football Focus, Wildgoose held opposing wide receivers to just 8.8 yards per reception when he was targeted during the 2022 season. Wildgoose is also credited with three run stops, while playing 61 snaps in run-support.
The Packers have a relatively deep cornerback room, with Jaire Alexander and Rasul Douglas off to relatively strong starts to the season. However, Wildgoose's versatility to be able to line up both outside as well as in the slot could make him an ideal depth piece in Green Bay's secondary. It could be the slot where the Packers are trying to find help, with kickoff return specialist Keisean Nixon currently holding down the role, but struggling to have a significant impact. With third-year cornerback Eric Stokes currently on the PUP list, a workout for a player like Wildgoose could be an attempt for the team to look at depth at defensive back while Stokes works himself back onto the practice field.
Through the first two weeks of the regular season, the Packers currently boast the NFL's 17th-ranked passing defense, after allowing 212 passing yards per game. Wildgoose could provide quality depth in Joe Barry's secondary.
