Head coach Dave Canales announced the news Monday as the Panthers began preparing for Sunday's game against the Chiefs. The coach also noted that the team will continue to evaluate on a week-to-week basis.
"Bryce will play this week," Canales said during his press conference. "Again, this is about the continued progress, about Bryce looking more and more confident as he's out there.
"In Germany, just felt a real confidence and aggressiveness to his play and all those things. And of course, the end result, winning. He continues to do things that put us in a position to put him back out there and continue to build on that."
Young began the season atop the depth chart. He led the offense in the first two weeks of the season as the Panthers lost to the Saints and Chargers. Canales then benched Young in favor of veteran backup Andy Dalton, who led the Panthers to a win over the Raiders.
Young remained the backup until late October when Dalton suffered a sprained thumb in a car wreck. He returned to the starting lineup against the Broncos and threw two touchdowns and two interceptions as the Panthers lost 28-14.
The last two weeks were significantly different as the Panthers won two games in a row. Young led a game-winning drive against the rival Saints and then he led his team to an overtime win over the Giants in Germany.
The Chiefs are a formidable foe considering that the team just lost its first game of the season, so Young will have a difficult matchup as he makes his fourth consecutive start. However, he will have an opportunity to show further progress as he faces the league's 14th-best pass defense.
Young will potentially have two additional weapons at his disposal as he remains the starting quarterback. Canales said that he expects rookie running back Jonathon Brooks to make his season debut after recovering from an ACL tear suffered in college.
Additionally, wide receiver Adam Thielen will potentially make his return to the lineup. The veteran went on Injured Reserve after Week 3 due to a hamstring injury, but he has since returned to practice.
