Drake Maye had an opportunity to deliver a dramatic finish for the New England Patriots on Wednesday night. Instead, the Seattle Seahawks delivered the final blow.

With the Patriots attempting to rally late in their Super Bowl rematch against the defending champions, Maye threw a devastating interception that effectively ended New England's hopes in a 13-10 loss at Lumen Field.

It was a fittingly painful conclusion to a difficult season opener for the Patriots quarterback.

Maye completed 23 of 33 passes for 178 yards and one touchdown but was intercepted three times and sacked three times. He did provide some production with his legs, rushing seven times for 47 yards.

But turnovers proved costly, with the final interception ensuring there would be no late comeback.

The matchup carried some extra history, of course. New England and Seattle famously met in Super Bowl XLIX following the 2014 season, when Malcolm Butler intercepted Russell Wilson at the goal line in the closing seconds to preserve a Patriots championship.

More than a decade later, these franchises met again with considerably less at stake. Still, the ending once again involved a late interception. This time, unfortunately for New England, it was the Patriots throwing it.

Maye and company will try to rebound when they host Aaron Rodgers and the Pittsburgh Steelers on Sept. 20.
