The incident happened just after 2 a.m. outside a business on West 38th Street near Seventh Avenue. A 29-year-old man was shot in the abdomen and taken to Bellevue Hospital. Mayor Eric Adams' office later identified the victim as Boyd.
According to the New York Post, citing law enforcement sources, the shooting followed a dispute that turned violent. The gunman fired twice, then fled in a BMW X8 SUV. A Mercedes-Benz Maybach also left the scene.
Police say the motive is still under investigation and it's unclear if Boyd was targeted. No arrests have been made.

The Jets said they are aware of the situation but are not commenting further. Boyd's agent hasn't responded to requests for an update.
Teammates, meanwhile, are asking for prayers, including linebacker Jermaine Johnson, who posted a message of support for Boyd and his family on X.
This is Boyd's first season with the Jets. He signed in March with the expectation he'd anchor Aaron Glenn's revamped special teams unit, but suffered a shoulder injury during training camp on August 2 and was placed on season-ending injured reserve.
Before that, Boyd carved out a reputation as one of the NFL's top special teamers over six seasons with the Vikings, Cardinals and Texans.
Boyd also made headlines during Houston's playoff loss to the Chiefs in January when he celebrated a forced fumble by ripping off his helmet and nearly knocking down his special teams coach.
Police ask anyone with information to come forward as the search continues.
