Las Vegas Raiders coach Antonio Pierce may have to really open up his pocketbook if a report from Tashan Reed of The Athletic is, well, on the money.
As relayed by Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk, a recent court filing by Jocelyn Pierce indicated that Antonio is financially responsible for $28 million in civil judgments. Jocelyn Pierce is Antonio's wife and is filing for bankruptcy.
"Citing documents obtained by TheAthletic.com, Reed explains that the bankruptcy filing includes a statement from Jocelyn Pierce that creditors have attempted to collect assets belonging to the couple," Florio wrote. "Nissan Motor Acceptance Corporation has a $23 million judgment and Hyundai Capital America has a $4.5 million judgment.
"According to the filing, both recently attempted to garnish Antonio Pierce's wages with the Raiders."
Wow. And we thought only everyday people like us could be at risk for having wages garnished. (None of us do, of course. We're all upstanding citizens who pay our debts.)
But as for Antonio, it could be a different story.
"The judgments apparently trace to an investment made in car dealerships during the 2010s," Florio wrote. "Personal guarantees apparently were made by Antonio Pierce. When the businesses in which he invested defaulted on their loans, the lenders obtained judgments against those who guaranteed the debts, including Antonio Pierce."
It has not been determined why his wife is filing for bankruptcy.
Pierce spent nine years in the NFL as a linebacker, winning a Super Bowl as a member of the New York Giants in 2007. He was named head coach of the Raiders in January.
