The move to place on Jan. 7 after team owner Mark Davis made the trip to the facility to deliver the news to the now-former head coach. According to ESPN's Adam Schefter, sources say that the team has retained GM Tom Telesco.
This firing took place after Pierce faced multiple questions from the media about his future with the Silver and Black. He said "no comment" multiple times after Sunday's loss to the Los Angeles Chargers. He then met with media members on Monday and provided another answer.
"I haven't been told anything different," Pierce said while wearing a Raiders Starter jacket. He continued and said "It's only coming from outside. It's not inside the building" in reference to his status.
This Monday press conference made it appear that the Raiders were leaning toward keeping Pierce for another full season. However, Davis provided a definitive answer on Tuesday by firing the head coach.
"The Las Vegas Raiders have relieved Antonio Pierce of his duties as head coach," the team said in a statement. "We appreciate Antonio's leadership, first as an interim head coach and this past season as the head coach.
"Antonio grew up a Raiders fan and his Silver and Black roots run deep. We are grateful for his ability to reignite what it means to be a Raider throughout the entire organization. We wish nothing but the best for Antonio and his family in the future."
Pierce was elevated to interim head coach in 2023 after the Raiders fired Josh McDaniels. He coached the Silver and Black in the final nine games. The team posted a 5-4 record, which contributed to the Raiders promoting him to full-time head coach.
The last season did not feature the same success. The Raiders dealt with multiple injuries at the quarterback position and throughout the roster. They traded Davante Adams to the Jets ahead of the trade deadline.
The Silver and Black delivered high-profile wins over the Ravens and Browns but also went through a 10-game losing streak in the heart of the season. This stretch included a 41-24 loss to the Bengals and a 32-13 loss to the Steelers.
The Raiders are now the sixth team with a head coach vacancy. They join the Jaguars, Saints, Patriots, Jets, and Bears. Teams such as the Titans, Dolphins, and Giants kept their head coaches for another season.
