Legendary NFL Kicker Retires At 41 Years Old

One of the most productive kickers in NFL history is calling it a career.

After 18 seasons, former San Francisco 49ers, New York Giants, and Chicago Bears kicker Robbie Gould announced his retirement on Thursday.

Originally an undrafted free agent out of Penn State, Gould went on to forge a potential Hall of Fame career, before retiring as the tenth-highest scoring player in NFL history, recording 1,961 points.

Gould announced his retirement via Instagram, where he highlighted his experience with the Chicago Bears where he spent the first 11 years of his career.

"All good things must come to an end." Gould posted. "The meaning of that saying is pretty simple, really. Great things in life cannot last forever. Everything is temporary."

Chicago named Gould one of the top-100 players in the illustrious history of the Bears, in 2019.

Gould was a First-Team All-Pro and Pro Bowl selection and made the Pro Bowl in 2006. The high-water mark of his time with the San Francisco 49ers, was reaching Super Bowl LIV.

A model of consistency during his time with the 49ers, Gould made a league-high 39 field goals in 2017, and his 97.1 field goal percentage in 2018 was the highest in the NFL.

After spending the first 13 weeks of the 2023 season as a free agent, Gould hung up his cleats for good, putting a capstone on a legendary career.

"At the end of the day, every organization I've played for has had a positive impact on my career," Gould wrote, in an extensive essay published to the Player's Tribune, announcing his retirement. "Each one leaving its unique and significant mark on my journey. And I could not be more thankful that's how it played out for me.
