McKnight, 28, was shot to death in his car at an intersection after an alleged road rage incident where Gasser followed him in his car. Gasser was initially detained after the shooting, but he was let go after questioning before being arrested a few days later for manslaughter.
After a grand jury deliberation, Gasser has his bond has been set at $750,000. The second-degree murder charge carries a potential life sentence in Louisiana. He pleaded innocent to the charges.
McKnight, the former No. 1 running back in the nation, played three seasons at USC, registering 2,213 yards and 13 touchdowns on the ground. McKnight also played four years in the NFL after he was drafted in the fourth round by the New York Jets. He last appeared in the NFL in 2014 with the Kansas City Chiefs.
McKnight was still working on his football career just last year, appearing on two Canadian Football League teams earlier this season.
