The Broncos coach appeared to take a veiled swipe at Russell Wilson following Denver's 33-32 comeback victory over the New York Giants. After the game, Payton praised Giants rookie Jaxson Dart, who has taken over as the team's starter after Wilson's brief run in New York.

"They found a little spark with that quarterback," Payton told reporters. "I was talking to [Giants owner] John Mara not too long ago and I said we were hoping that that change would have happened long after our game."

Translation: Payton had hoped the Broncos would face Wilson in Week 7.

Wilson, who started the Giants' first three games before being benched, went 0-3 to start the season. The 35-year-old has struggled since his rocky 2023 season under Payton in Denver, when he threw for just over 3,000 yards with 26 touchdowns and eight interceptions before being benched for Jarrett Stidham late in the year.

The Broncos released him in the offseason, eating $85 million in dead cap to move on.

Dart, meanwhile, has given New York new life. The rookie threw for 283 yards and three touchdowns Sunday, nearly leading the Giants to a statement win before Denver stormed back.

Payton got the win he wanted. And maybe, just maybe, the last word too.
