The NFC West team announced on Jan. 26 the hiring of offensive coordinator Klint Kubiak, who joins the team after a season with the New Orleans Saints. Kubiak, the son of Super Bowl-winning head coach Gary Kubiak, will replace the departed Ryan Grubb.
Last season, the Seahawks ranked eighth in total offense with 332.2 yards per game and eighth in passing offense with 236.5 yards per game. However, the NFC West team ranked 28th in rushing offense with 95.7 yards per game.
Kubiak started last season on a high note. He guided the Saints to 91 points and 811 yards during a 2-0 start. However, the offense began to struggle as injuries affected quarterbacks, offensive linemen, and receivers.
Despite the issues, the Saints still ended the season ranked 14th in rushing offense, 23rd in passing offense with three quarterbacks, and 11th in red zone offense.
Before joining the Saints, Kubiak worked as a quarterbacks coach, passing-game coordinator, and play-caller for the Broncos in 2022. He then joined the 49ers as the passing-game coordinator in 2023. 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy reached the Pro Bowl in 2023 after throwing for a career-best 4,280 yards, 31 touchdowns, and 11 interceptions.
Kubiak also spent one season (2021) as the offensive coordinator for the Vikings, Mike Zimmer's final season as head coach. The NFC North team went 8-9, but quarterback Kirk Cousins threw for 4,221 yards, 33 touchdowns, and seven interceptions.
Running back Dalvin Cook rushed for 1,159 yards and six touchdowns while backup Alexander Mattison rushed for 491 yards and three touchdowns. Receiver Justin Jefferson posted 1,616 yards and 10 touchdowns as the top option in the passing attack.
The Vikings ranked 12th in total yards, 11th in passing yards, 17th in rushing yards, and ninth in red zone percentage. The Vikings also ranked first in avoiding turnovers on offense.
With the Seattle Seahawks adding Kubiak to the fold, the next step is to answer other questions on offense. Will receiver Tyler Lockett return? Will quarterback Geno Smith be the starter in the final year of his contract?
