Former NFL Player Arrested in Connection With Mother's Death

Sergio Brown, a former NFL player, was arrested in connection to his mother's death after he was deported from Mexico.

Former New England Patriots defensive back Sergio Brown has been arrested in connection with the death of his mother, according to Josh Campbell and Eric Levenson of CNN.

Brown's mother, Myrtle Brown, was found dead Sept. 16 in Maywood, Illinois, in a creek behind her house.

She was 73 years old.

"Myrtle was a beautiful, loving, and inspirational soul that made everyone around her feel like they mattered," the Brown family said in a statement last week. "With her contagious smile and personality, our loss of Myrtle has left an indescribable void not only in our lives, but in our communities."

According to law enforcement and as we saw in the aftermath of the discovery of her body, Sergio Brown, 35, traveled to Mexico. On Tuesday, Mexico deported Brown back to the United States, and he was apprehended in San Diego.

After her body was found, the medical examiner ruled her death a homicide.

In the wake of her disappearance, her sister and Sergio's aunt, Sheila Simmons, said nothing had seemed "out of order." Sergio's brother, Nick Brown, took to Facebook saying, "I want him to know that I love you and please come home," according to the Chicago Tribune.

Later that day, he went on Instagram.

"My brother Sergio is still missing," Nick Brown wrote. "If anyone knows where he is, I want him to know that I love you, and please come home."

In addition to family members, those in her community also commented on the matter.

"Myrtle, she was an outstanding woman, and I'm hoping she's in the right place and she's with God," said Carlos Cortez, Myrtle Brown's next-door neighbor. "I never would've expected this in a million years."

Brown played college football at Notre Dame, going undrafted in the 2010 NFL Draft. He signed with the Patriots, playing there for two seasons. He then played for the Indianapolis Colts, Jacksonville Jaguars and the Buffalo Bills. He hasn't been in the NFL since 2016, when he was 28 years old.
