The third-year quarterback has been limited in practice all week while dealing with the issue that surfaced after a loss to the Seahawks. He underwent an MRI as the week progressed and focused on rehab while trying to prepare for the Packers.
Purdy was limited in practice on Wednesday and Thursday. According to Cam Inman of the "Bay Area News Group," he then missed Friday's session, the final one before the 49ers head to Wisconsin.
"He was still limited (Thursday)," head coach Kyle Shanahan said during the Thursday episode of "The Kyle Shanahan Show" on KNBR. "He didn't do as much yesterday but did a little more today.
"By no means was he doing his normal workload. He went out there and did a little bit and went back in about halfway through and rested his arm up, just continuing his rehab. Hopefully, it will be great on Sunday."
With Purdy missing practice on Friday, the attention turns to the 49ers backup options. Brandon Allen leads the group as the primary backup with Josh Dobbs and Tanner Mordecai behind him.
Allen has started nine games in his career, winning two of them. He led the Broncos to a 24-19 win over the Browns in 2019. He then led the Bengals to a 37-31 win over the Texans in 2020. Allen threw for 371 yards and two touchdowns against the Texans.
The 49ers are 5-5 and in a three-way tie with the Rams and Seahawks. The Cardinals have the lead in the division with a 6-4 record.
The schedule only grows more difficult for the 49ers as the team tries to get Purdy back to full strength. The Packers are on Sunday. After that, the 49ers take on the AFC East-leading Buffalo Bills.
The schedule continues with games against the Bears, Rams, Dolphins, Lions, and Cardinals.
