Pittsburgh Steelers cornerback Cameron Sutton has been suspended eight games for violating the NFL personal conduct policy, the league announced in a statement.
Sutton had been wanted by the police on a misdemeanor battery charge for a few weeks in March, before finally turning himself in. He was still a member of the Detroit Lions at the time of his arrest.
The Lions released him once the warrant was released — with the Steelers signing him to a one-year contract last month.
Sutton's arrest followed an alleged domestic incident with a woman in Florida.
"According to the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office, the alleged victim in the case called cops at around 4:52 AM on March 7 claiming she had just been roughed up by Sutton," TMZ wrote. "During the call, cops say she told dispatch she was in fear for her life."
Police first attempted to locate Sutton at his residence in Pinellas County, TMZ reported, citing sources. They then attempted to call him — also to no avail.
Sutton, 29, was actually selected by the Steelers in the third round of the 2017 NFL Draft. He spent the first six years of his career with Pittsburgh before signing a three-year, $33 million contract with Detroit ahead of last season.
He appeared in all 17 regular-season games in 2023, as well as all three of the Lions' playoff games. During the regular season, he recorded 65 tackles, including 50 solos and four tackles for a loss, with one interception for 23 yards.
Like all NFL teams, Pittsburgh is set to open training camp at the end of the month.
