The Pittsburgh Steelers will continue to move forward with Justin Fields as the starting quarterback.
"Really, we're kind of in the same posture as we were in last week with (Russell Wilson)," head coach Mike Tomlin told reporters in a Tuesday press conference.
"As I sit here today, Russ is not scheduled to be a full participant in practice, and so we're readying a plan that features Justin and his readiness."
The AFC North team, which started the season 2-0, named Wilson the starter ahead of the season. However, the former Seahawks and Broncos quarterback has not seen the field yet this season.
Wilson aggravated a calf injury in the week leading up to the season opener against the Falcons. This kept him out of the game. He was then a limited practice participant all week leading up to last weekend's game against the Broncos.
"We'll follow Russ throughout the week, and if his participation gets to a level in participation and quality where he should consider him, we'll delve into that at that time," Tomlin added. "Obviously, when that happens is a component of the consideration.
"But as I sit here today, he is not scheduled to be a full participant tomorrow in practice, and so we're readying ourselves around Justin, and we'll stay in that mindset until something else happens. Hypotheticals is a waste of our time."
The Steelers have won the first two games of the season while relying on a run-heavy attack. Fields has only attempted 43 passes this season. He has completed 69.8% of his throws for 273 yards and one touchdown with a passer rating of 94.4. He has not thrown an interception.
The team's assortment of skill-position players have combined for 77 rushing attempts. Najee Harris leads the group with 37 carries for 139 yards. Fields has 22 carries for 84 yards.
Jaylen Warran has 11 carries for 49 yards and Cordarrelle Patterson has six carries for 16 yards. Wide receiver George Pickens has one rushing attempt, which lost 10 yards.
Fields will now likely get another start as he continues in his first season with the Steelers. He will face off with the Chargers, who are 2-0 under head coach Jim Harbaugh, and he will prepare for this matchup without worrying about the depth chart.
"Justin has a game to get ready for this week," Tomlin said. "I'm not doing him any justice by talking hypotheticals. I want him focused.
"I'm focused on the next task. Until Russell gets to a state of readiness where he's a consideration, I won't be speculating on any of that in any way."
