The 49'ers almost wore some truly awful helmets 25 years ago

These could have been horrific.

The San Francisco 49'ers almost rocked some truly awful helmets back in the day. 25 years ago the team tried to roll out a helmet that dropped the "SF" logo and replaced it with a "49ers" logo that looks just ugly.

Those helmets were introduced with great fanfare by coach George Seifert and owner Eddie DeBartolo Jr. in February of 1991, with the team saying it was time for a fresh look. It did not go over well."The phones keep ringing," team PR assistant Al Barba told the San Francisco Chronicle. "People are saying the old logo was classier, that it meant San Francisco. I guess they basically don't like it."

The fans were so upset about the change because they thought it meant the team would leave San Francisco and this might be the first step. If you've never seen the helmet or don't remember it, that's because the helmets were never worn in a game and never made it to the field, fortunately.
