Some might remember, the former Ohio State running back was waived by the Cowboys at the end of the 2022 season due to salary cap reasons.

That is to say, now owner Jerry Jones is saying this time they are releasing Elliot for his own good.

"Out of respect and appreciation for Zeke and wanting to provide him with an opportunity to pursue any potential playoff participation possible, we are releasing him from the Cowboys roster today," Cowboys owner/GM Jones said in a statement.

The reports indicate that Elliott requested this, as the hope is that a playoff contending team may pick up the 29-year-old running back off of waivers.

Jones continued, "As I have said many times previously, Zeke's impact as one of the greatest to ever play with the Star on their helmet will never change and is etched in our record books and history forever. We thank him, love him and wish him the absolute best."

Notably, Elliott was drafted by the Cowboys with the fourth overall pick in the 2016 NFL draft and went on to become the third all-time leading rusher in franchise history (8,488 rushing yards), trailing only Tony Dorsett (12,036) and Emmitt Smith (17,162).

In view of Ezekiel Elliott's storied career, he is a 3x Pro Bowler, 2x All-Pro and led the NFL in rushing during both the 2016 and 2018 seasons.
