Facing uncertain future, Tyler Lockett celebrates Seahawks tenure with custom cleats

Tyler Lockett doesn't know if he will return to the Seattle Seahawks in 2025, so he used Sunday's game against the Los Angeles Rams to celebrate his tenure in the Pacific Northwest.

The veteran receiver donned a pair of custom cleats on Sunday featuring two different designs. One had an NFL Draft selection graphic showing when the Seahawks picked him back in 2015. The other had a long message of gratitude for the highs and lows of his NFL career.

Lockett is still under contract with the Seahawks after Sunday. His two-year, $29,660,000 extension runs through the 2025 season, per Spotrac.

However, the veteran receiver knows that he could become a salary cap casualty as the Seahawks prepare for the 2025 season. He will count $30,895,000 against the cap, but the Seahawks can reduce the dead cap number to only $4 million by releasing Lockett.

The veteran is well aware of this fact, which he mentioned in the week leading up to the regular-season finale against the Rams.

"The fact that I've been here for 10 years, and they've allowed me to thrive, allowed me to come into my own — I had ups and downs throughout my career, on and off the field, but they helped me out and still were there with me — and I think it was cool," Lockett said, via a team transcript.

"I got a chance to play with Hall of Famers here. I got the chance to meet so many amazing people. I got the chance to win the Walter Payton Man of the Year, the Steve Largent Award, and so I think it's cool. I got the chance to be the realtor to the Seahawks, and hopefully, all of these things continue."

"If they decide to let me go after this year, then that (Week 16 game vs Minnesota) might've been the last time I was able to play while on the team at CenturyLink... If you're going to go out, you want to be able to go out and giving it everything you had, being thankful and grateful for the opportunities and the moments."

Lockett has made an impact for the Seahawks in a variety of ways since entering the NFL in 2015. He was an All-Pro kick returner in 2015, and he earned a trip to the Pro Bowl after scoring multiple return touchdowns.

While Lockett remained a threat on returns, he began to make a bigger impact on offense. He topped 1,000 yards receiving for the first time in 2019 and then he posted four consecutive 1,000-yard seasons.

Lockett's numbers fell this season as Jaxon-Smith Njigba became the top option in the passing attack. This kept him from potentially returning to the Pro Bowl or topping 1,000 yards for the fifth time, but he accepted his decreased role with grace.

"Honestly, I think my biggest contribution to this team has just been sacrifice," Lockett said. "I think the whole season has been sacrifice, and it's sacrifice for the betterment of the team. It's sacrifice for the betterment of the other players. It's sacrifice for a lot of different stuff. I think that's really been the whole portion of myself."
