The team issued an apology via a statement that was released on social media (per ESPN).
"We, the LA Kings and our partners at Rank & Rally want to sincerely apologize to all our friends in the Armenian Community and beyond for the oversight that may have inadvertently impacted your experience during what should've been a joyous celebration."
As many know the history between Armenia and Turkey, the neighboring countries have had conflict, which goes back to 1915 when an estimated 1.5 million Armenians were massacred by the Ottoman Empire.
To note, this incident has sparked criticism among those in the community, as the scarves were meant to honor the Armenian heritage, but have instead brought up controversy.
"We source, stock and sell merchandise from a select list of manufacturers that are officially licensed by the league, and we were unaware of the item's production origin."
That is, the Kings have announced they will be offering full refunds or exchanges in person (or by mail) for anyone who bought the scarf at the hockey team's store.
