In a heartfelt letter posted on the Sabres' website, Dahlin explained that Matovac suffered sudden heart failure while abroad.

"Fortunately, she received CPR on multiple occasions, and up to a couple of hours at a time to keep her alive, which ultimately saved her life," Dahlin wrote. "Without her receiving lifesaving CPR, the result would have been unimaginable. It is hard to even think about the worst-case scenario."

Matovac was rushed to a hospital in France, placed on life support, and eventually underwent a heart transplant. She remains overseas while rehabbing, but Dahlin said doctors expect her to make a full recovery.

"While Carolina is still working through her rehab to return to be with me in Buffalo, she has demonstrated an incredible determination, spirit, positivity, and resilience that I am in awe of," Dahlin added. "This has undoubtedly been the most challenging chapter of our lives, however it is something that we have learned so much from. We will continue to grow from these experiences and are so grateful for all the love and support we have received."

Dahlin, 25, thanked the medical staff that cared for Matovac, as well as Sabres ownership and fans for their support. He used the moment to stress the importance of CPR training, organ donation, and awareness of heart-related issues that impact families everywhere.

The former No. 1 overall pick is entering his eighth NHL season and second year as captain of the Sabres. He said the experience has given him a new outlook on life, both on and off the ice.
