Olympian Dies in Reported Suicide After 'Severe Depression': Zsanett Németh Was 32

Zsanett Nemeth, a national champion wrestler from Hungary, has passed away at the age of 32. The reported cause of death was suicide.

According to BGNES, the 32-year-old died around 10:30 a.m. local time on June 23, 2026. She reportedly jumped from the 11th floor of a building in the residential block of the Diana sports complex. This facility is in Sofia, Bulgaria.

Sources from the Sofia Directorate of the Interior told the outlet that the authorities have a "theory of suicide linked to a personal relationship" with another athlete. Another outlet reported that Nemeth had "severe depression" prior to her death by suicide.

While a native of Hungary, Nemeth also held citizenship in Bulgaria. She recently won the national title in the heavyweight category of wrestling.

The Hungarian spent several years competing in the women's freestyle wrestling, and she competed all over the world. This includes the 2010 Youth Olympic Games in Singapore.

She also competed in the 2013 World Championships in Budapest, Hungary; the European Championships in Vantaa, Finland; the 2014 world championships in Tashkent, Uzbekistan; the European Games in Baku, Azerbaijan; and the 2015 world championships in Las Vegas, Nevada.

The 2016 season featured Nemeth representing Hungary in the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. She finished 10th in the freestyle 75 kilogram (165 pounds) category.

Nemeth continued competing through 2021. She won a bronze medal in the 2019 European Championships while wrestling in the freestyle 76 KG class. She then won a silver medal at the World Beach Games in Doha, Qatar. She won this medal in the beach wrestling class.

"President Stanka Zlateva and the Board of Directors of the Bulgarian Wrestling Federation express their most sincere condolences to the family, relatives, friends and teammates of (Zsanett) Nemeth on the occasion of her sudden and premature death," the Bulgarian Wrestling Federation said in a translated statement.

"The news of (Zsanett's) loss filled us with deep sadness. Our grief is even greater because in recent months we have been actively working with her on preparing her as part of the future of Bulgarian women's wrestling.

"Thanks to the joint efforts, state funding was secured for the athlete, she actively participated in the camps and training process of the Bulgarian women's national wrestling team and had already received Bulgarian identity documents. These were important steps on the way to her final competitive mapping for Bulgaria.

"After arranging the necessary relations with the international organization of the World Wrestling, the Board of Directors of the BF Borba was about to take a decision, allowing (Zsanett) Nemeth to officially receive the right to represent our country on the international carpet.

"Today, however, all sports plans and dreams give way to the human pain of a heavy loss. Bulgarian wrestling lost a talented competitor, and all who had the opportunity to work with her and know her lost a valuable person."
