The incident occurred on the Olympia delle Tofane slope in Italy. Vonn, starting 13th, completed part of her run before clipping one of the gates with her right pole in midair. This sent her into a tumble down the icy slope.

Once the five-time Olympian came to a stop, the medical team hurried over to treat her. A helicopter then flew to the area so the team could medevac her for further treatment.

"Update: Lindsey Vonn sustained an injury, but is in stable condition and in good hands with a team of American and Italian physicians," US Ski & Snowboard Team posted on X on Sunday.

The event resumed after a 20-minute pause. Vonn's teammate, Breezy Johnson, went on to win the gold medal for the United States. She became the first American in 16 years to win the Olympic downhill gold.

"Lindsey has accomplished so much and will live in a different echelon than I do," Johnson said after the win, "but I think that to have your name alongside her is really something special."

Vonn, who came out of a six-year retirement to compete in the 2026 Games, entered the Olympics dealing with an injury. She ruptured the ACL in her left knee, which seemingly ended her hopes of competing in Italy. However, she made it to the event and competed while wearing a knee brace.

The crash ended her hopes of adding another medal to a packed trophy case. The 41-year-old has won 84 World Cup races, eight championships, and three Olympic medals during her professional career.

Vonn is not the only Olympian to sustain an injury in the downhill event. Cande Moreno from Andorra crashed after her left knee buckled. She also had to be airlifted from the course.
