The incident occurred during the Women's 1,500-meter event inside Milano Ice Skating Arena. Sellier fell to the ice along with 15-time Olympic medalist Ariana Fontana of Italy and American skater Kristen Santos-Griswold. A competitor's skate sliced Sellier's face right under her left eye.

The Polish short track speed skater remained down on the ice while receiving medical attention behind the privacy of a white sheet. Medical officials ultimately took her away on a stretcher as she managed a thumbs up to the crowd. Blood on the ice served as a reminder of the incident that had just occurred.

Sellier underwent surgery after the skate slice incident. A Polish Team spokesperson told the BBC that the speed skater was in good condition after surgery and that the team was waiting for further tests to check the eye for any signs of damage.

Sellier also provided an update on her Instagram page. She posted a selfie from her hospital bed while only showing part of her face.

"I know that one day i'll look at this picture and remember that i'm stronger than i ever believed," she wrote. "thank you for all your words of support, just wanted to let you know that i'm doing quite okay."

Since this post, she has continued to be active on Instagram. She has shown herself traveling, visiting the Oakley store, and celebrating her 26th birthday.
