Olympic Athlete Tom Craig Arrested In Paris For Buying Cocaine

Australian field hockey player Tom Craig was competing at the Olympic Games in Paris, and following his team losing in the quarterfinals to the Netherlands, he apparently still wanted to celebrate.

That is to say, after attempting to buy cocaine in the Pigalle district of Paris, Craig had been caught in the act by police and was put behind bars along with the drug seller.

Craig addressed the media since being released from police custody.

"I'd firstly like to apologize for what has occurred over the past 24 hours. I made a terrible mistake and I take full responsibility for my actions," Craig said. "My actions are my own and by no way reflect the values of my family, my teammates, my friends, my sport, and the Australian Olympic team."

Notably, the 28-year-old won a silver medal during the 2021 Olympics in Tokyo, and is currently married to Australian women's player Alice Arnott.

"I've embarrassed you all. I'm truly sorry," Craig stated.

The Australian Olympic Committee spoke on the incident, saying they are fully aware of what took place and are doing their best to help the Kookaburras player.

"The Australian Olympic Committee (AOC) has confirmed an Australian hockey team member is in custody after being arrested in Paris on August 6th. No charges have been laid. The AOC is continuing to make inquiries and arrange support for the Team member."

In regards to the punishment for the crime, French law indicates that people caught with five grams or less of cocaine can face fines as low as 150 Euros ($160 USD).
