Australian TV reporter Danika Mason issued an on-air apology Thursday after a live segment during the Winter Olympics sparked widespread reaction and speculation online. Namely, that she was drunk.

Mason, who works for Channel Nine, appeared to slur her words while discussing Olympic events and everyday topics, prompting viewers to question what was happening.
At first, some chalked it up to brutal conditions in Italy, where temperatures dipped well below freezing. Mason later clarified the truth.
"I totally misjudged a situation," Mason said. "I shouldn't have had a drink, especially in these conditions. It's cold, there's altitude, and I hadn't had dinner. But I take full responsibility. It's not the standard I set for myself."

The moment traveled fast on social media, eventually leading Channel Nine to turn off comments on the clip. Mason's apology, however, helped reset the conversation.
Her colleagues stood firmly behind her. Co host Jayne Azzopardi praised Mason's work ethic, while Karl Stefanovic brushed it off and urged everyone to move forward. Even Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese weighed in, saying he was "pro Danika" and that there was nothing more to the story.
Mason emphasized that the focus should return to the competition as the 2026 Winter Olympics enter their final stretch.
The Games have already delivered plenty of chaos and viral moments. This one just happened to land off the field of play.
