The couple told the world with a joint post on Instagram. They sat together on a bench while Matheson held up the ultrasound photos.
"We're pregnant (heart emoji)," the caption said while adding that the due date will be in July 2026.
This news continues a relationship that began with a chance meeting, multiple text messages, and some missed context clues.
"We met at a Canadian Olympic foundation fundraiser," Matheson told Streets of Toronto in 2025. "We had a great night, and following that, she texted and reached out several times, but I am a terrible texter and was a bit oblivious, and we kind of lost touch.
"I was probably smitten from the beginning, but she's very much heart first, while I'm very much a thinker, so I think it clicked for her sooner, and it took me longer to catch up."
Bucsis, an Olympic speed skater-turned-sports broadcaster, proposed. The couple then tied the knot during a venue outside of Missoula, Montana, on Aug. 31, 2023
They have remained together ever since while balancing their relationship with the work responsibilities. Bucsis is a broadcaster for CBC Sports, and she has provided coverage of the Olympic games in Tokyo, Beijing, Paris, and Milan-Cortina.
Matheson, a two-time bronze medalist as a soccer player, has remained focused on her specific sport since retiring in 2021. She has been inducted in the Canada Soccer Hall of Fame, and she has joined forces with business partner Thomas Gilbert to launch a new endeavor.
These two spearheaded the creation of Canada's first professional women's soccer league, the Northern Super League (NSL). This league features six teams — Montreal Roses FC, Halifax Tides FC, AFC Toronto, Ottowa Rapid FC, Calgary Wild FC, and Vancouver Rise FC.
