Russ Hodge, an American decathlete who competed in the Olympics and once held a world record in one of track and field's most demanding events, has died. He was 86.

Hodge died May 6 at Wilson Hospital in Johnson City, New York, according to his family.
Born Sept. 12, 1939, in Monticello, New York, Hodge emerged as one of the top U.S. decathletes of the 1960s, earning national recognition for his versatility across 10 events that test speed, strength and endurance.
He represented the United States at the 1964 Summer Olympics, finishing ninth in the decathlon against a deep international field. His Olympic appearance marked the pinnacle of a career defined by steady excellence at the national and global levels.
Two years later, Hodge reached another milestone when he set a decathlon world record in Los Angeles with 8,230 points, briefly standing atop the sport during a highly competitive era. He remained a fixture among the nation's best, recording multiple top-four finishes at the AAU national championships, including runner-up results in 1965, 1966, 1970 and 1971.
Hodge also competed in the Pan American Games, placing fourth in 1963 before earning a silver medal in 1971 in Cali, Colombia.
A standout at UCLA, he earned All-American honors while competing for one of the country's premier collegiate track programs. Injuries ultimately prevented a return to the Olympics, but his impact on the sport endured.
Athletics were central to Hodge's life and family. His mother, Alice Arden, competed in the 1936 Olympics in the high jump, making them the only known mother and son to represent the United States in Olympic competition. The pair were recognized in 2003 by the Sullivan County Historical Society for that distinction.
Hodge is survived by his wife, Pamela; his children, Seth, April, Heather, Alice, Laura and Russell; two grandchildren; and his brother, James. His family said a private celebration of life will be held.
